A tribute to the profession.

During the week of May 10th to the 17th, Washington, D.C. will see nearly 30,000 law enforcement members, survivors, and supporters from around the world. As the capital hosts the annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service and candlelight vigil.  Police Week focuses on the addition of the names of those who have been killed in the line of duty in the past year to be carved into the Memorial wall, where their honor, dedication, service, and sacrifice will be etched into eternity for the entire nation to see.

Last year, 111 Law Enforcement Officers lost their lives in the line of duty.  The lowest number in the last 10 years.  Annually, on average, 150 members of Law Enforcement are killed in the line of duty.   In the covid era, 2020 to 2022, over 1 thousand members died in the line of duty.  Additionally, an estimated 10 to 20 thousand officers a year suffer injuries significant enough to cause disability and force retirements.

These men and women entered a profession that asks not only for their time, but a commitment to our community, to protect those who cannot protect themselves, to put our community needs in front of their own family's needs, to put themselves in harm's way for the men, women, and children that live in those communities.  We enter this profession willingly and are fully aware of the inherent risks and dangers.  Our service crosses all cultures, races, ideologies, and religions. Our service is blind to the divisions sewn between us; we respond regardless of our differences and beliefs.  That fact alone makes those who gave their lives in the line of duty a national treasure. They are owed our utmost honor and gratitude, for we will never be able to repay that debt, and they deserve more than we can offer; it is their sacrifice that makes our civilization civilized.

To the families who have lost everything, we will always remember your sacrifice, which gives us the safety and the knowledge that good men and women stand guard, willing and ready to watch over us, protect us, and bring justice to every community in this great country.
